Challenges Identified
Despite the outreach’s significant impact, several challenges were noted:
Most patients had limited prior access to standard medications, highlighting the urgent need for funding.
There is a high demand for continuous follow-up care and medical interventions for SCD warriors.
Additional awareness programs are essential to reach more underserved communities effectively.
Recommendations
Education and Awareness Campaigns: Strengthen efforts to educate families, communities, and healthcare professionals on the management of sickle cell disease, emphasizing the role of vitamins and supplements in improving patient outcomes.
Policy Reforms and Partnership Expansion: Collaborate with government agencies, healthcare organizations, and sponsors to expand outreach efforts across other states and regions. Advocate for policy reforms that mandate the inclusion of Vitamin C, Vitamin D, and Zinc in the standard care guidelines for managing SCD.
Sustained Medical Support: Implement regular medical outreaches and follow-up programs to ensure continuous care for SCD patients, while advocating for the integration of essential supplements like Vitamin C, Vitamin D, and Zinc into standard treatment protocols.
Conclusion
The Brain and Body Foundation’s free medical outreach on 14th December 2024 was a significant step towards improving the lives of sickle cell warriors in Plateau State. With 220 patients served, many of whom had never received standard care before, this initiative brought hope and essential medical support to families in need.
We express our gratitude to the Plateau Hospital Management Board, Comprehensive Health Care Center, and all partners who contributed to the success of this program. Together, we can continue to make a tangible difference in the lives of sickle cell warriors across Nigeria.
